WASHINGTON – Seeking to revive his flagging campaign for the presidency, Sen. Ted Cruz (TP – Texas) is now threatening to shut down the government over the Planned Parenthood controversy.
Recently, a group opposing reproductive rights for women secretly videotaped a meeting in which a Planned Parenthood official discussed the possibility of selling fetal tissue. The video was shown, privately, to carefully selected Members of Congress a week before the video was publicly released. This was done deliberately so that "pro-life" members of Congress could introduce legislation to defund Planned Parenthood. Planned Parenthood receives roughly one third of its budget from the federal government through congressional appropriations, although included in that amount is some money from the states.
On Tuesday, the radioactive Cruz, who recently complimented Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell by calling him a liar, addressed a pro-life group at the United States Capitol, saying, along with 18 House Republicans, that he “cannot and will not support any funding resolution…that contains any funding for Planned Parenthood.” Meanwhile, GOP social conservatives like Senators James Lankford of Oklahoma and Jeff Sessions of Alabama said that they will consider supporting an effort to attach a spending writer that would eliminate Planned Parenthood’s $528 million in annual government funding to must-pass spending legislation this fall.
In response, DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz told a solitary reporter, "If Ted Cruz, who led the federal government shutdown in 2013, wants to base his presidential campaign on depriving women of their rights under the law, let’s just see what happens.”
Wasserman Schultz then whispered into the solitary reporter’s ear, “I am even more excited about the prospect of Bernie Sanders whipping Ted Cruz’ ass."
